"Crime Junkie," one of the nation's top true-crime podcasts, released an episode on Thursday diving into the case of 25-year-old Charlotte woman Shanquella Robinson.
Why it matters: The far-reaching show is bound to spark renewed attention — and possibly place new pressure on authorities — to continue investigating the more than three-year-old case.
- For the episode, "Crime Junkie" collected details from an anonymous person they refer to as "Mike," who says he was on the beach trip on which Robinson died. Host Ashley Flowers says this person has never spoken publicly and claims to have never spoken to police.
What they're saying: "When we cover a case like Shanquella Robinson's, it's because there are still questions that deserve answers," Flowers told Axios in a statement.
- She said their goal is not to sensationalize but "make sure her story isn't lost as time passes."
Catch up quick: Robinson was found dead while vacationing in Cabo, Mexico, in October 2022 with a group of college friends, now known as the "Cabo Six." Her parents were initially told that she had gotten sick from alcohol poisoning. But her death certificate later revealed that she died of neck and spinal cord injuries.
- A viral video later surfaced on social media showing Robinson allegedly being beaten inside a hotel room. In a wrongful death lawsuit, the family accused Daejhanae Jackson — who has since changed her name to E'Mani Green — of attacking Robinson. Green denied the allegations in court.
- To date, the FBI has not pursued any federal charges. Mexican authorities even issued an arrest warrant, but the suspect in the femicide case has not been extradited as requested.
The intrigue: "Mike" reportedly told one of the podcast "reporters" that he arrived at the vacation spot after Robinson's alleged attack and recounted details of what he saw.
- "He has more pieces to the puzzle that might fill in what led up to the fight," Flowers says during the episode.
