Charlotte parents are expected to have spent $756 on average per child this year on back-to-school shopping, according to new figures from Deloitte, which surveyed hundreds of K-12 parents.
That figure is mostly unchanged from last year, but 32% higher than the national average ($570).
Why it matters: Back-to-school shopping is an essential part of the academic year, but it can strain family budgets that have already been stretched thin amid still-high inflation.
What they're saying: "Our research shows that local parents are more likely to shop for tech products this year, which could drive up spending," Kaki Murphy, a Charlotte-based Deloitte partner, Audit & Assurance Services, said in a statement to Axios.
Charlotte parents also plan to spend more on extracurricular activities and an outfit for the first day of school, she added.
What's next: Gov. Josh Stein has said he wants to bring back a tax-free holiday, something the state last had in 2013, to offer some reprieve to North Carolinians. That hasn't happened yet, though.
