The Commonwealth development in the heart of Plaza Midwood continues to introduce mostly national chains with devoted followings to Charlotte, including Maman and PopUp Bagels.
Why it matters: The eclectic neighborhood is entering a new chapter with this slate of trendy out-of-state businesses, which aim to draw in both residents from the luxury apartments above and customers from around the city.
Here are the newly announced tenants joining the mix:
- Maman, a New York City-based French bakery and event space, is opening its first location in the Carolinas, first reported by Charlotte development writers Clayton Sealey and Jason Thomas.
- PopUp Bagels, a popular chain that's breaking into the Charlotte market with this shop and another at The Bowl at Ballantyne.
- Polished Nail Bar
- GLO30, a skincare studio.
- Remix Salon
- Warby Parker, an eyewear brand.
- South Block, a smoothie and acai bowl spot out of D.C.
Between the lines: Crosland Southeast's Bobby Speir says it is too soon to share opening dates.
Catch up quick: Other tenants that have been announced for the property include restaurants Uchi, Harriet's Hamburgers, bartaco and Sweetgreen, plus the contrast therapy studio Sweathouz, Axios previously reported.
- Yonder Yoga, Solidcore and bootmaker Lucchese have all opened. This is Lucchese's first store in the East.
- Van Leeuwen Ice Cream, doughnut shop The Salty and Warby Parker are nearing openings.
- LA Sugaring, a previously announced tenant, has terminated its lease.
The big picture: Commonwealth is a roughly 12-acre, transformative development in Plaza Midwood. In addition to the new retail, the project features about 150,000 square feet of office, which is on pace to receive occupancy approval next week.
- The Rowe apartment complex is complete and about 30% leased, mostly by renters-by-choice in their 30s and 40s, Speir said.
- Crosland Southeast is still adding the finishing touches with landscaping and expects to celebrate the grand opening in early 2026.
- About two neighboring acres are being prepped for a future phase, which will likely include a boutique hotel. Whether construction starts soon is dependent on securing an office user, Speir says. Without office interest, Crosland Southeast may pursue more multifamily.
What's next: Five retail spaces are still unclaimed: 5,979 square feet right along Central Avenue next to Five Guys, 3,342 square feet, 1,005 square feet, 1,546 square feet and 1,373 square feet.
- An office user may end up filling a second revitalized vintage building on site and two other potential storefronts (2,605 square feet and 1,541 square feet).
