Violent crime is declining across Charlotte, signaling what police describe as an "encouraging" and "promising" trend. However, in Uptown, crime is up, driven largely by a surge in robberies, according to data obtained by Axios.
Why it matters: The data show Uptown's public safety isn't just a perception issue. Crime is, in fact, disproportionately on the rise compared to other parts of the city.
The big picture: Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's mid-year public safety statistics, covering January through June 2025, show overall crime has decreased by 8% compared to the same period last year. Violent crime — including homicides, rapes, robberies and aggravated assaults — fell "dramatically" by 25%, CMPD said.
Yes, but: In CMPD's Central Division, which encompasses Uptown, overall crime is up slightly, 2.4%. Between January and the end of June, 1,661 offenses were recorded, versus 1,622 in the same period last year.
- Violent crime is up 9.1%, with 156 offenses recorded in the first two quarters of this year compared to 143 in 2024. The rise appears to be driven by robberies, which rose 54.5%.
- There were 51 robberies — 20 of which were armed — compared to 33 in the 2024 reporting period, of which 15 were armed. Citywide robberies are down 21%. (CMPD did not respond to a request for comment about what may be driving the spike in Uptown robberies by press time.)
- Property crime in Central Division rose 1.8% in the first two quarters of the year compared to last year. Meanwhile, citywide property crime is down 5%. This includes residential and commercial burglary, auto theft and larceny.
Reality check: The mid-year reporting period ended June 30, and the data does not reflect a streak of violence in Uptown this month.
- In the early morning of Sunday, July 13, five people were injured and one person was killed in a shooting near Encore Nightclub in the 300 block of North College Street. CMPD reported finding more than seven guns at the scene. Two suspects were arrested for possessing firearms, but neither is facing murder-related charges.
- The morning of Sunday, July 6, an officer was shot in the leg in the 600 block of North Church Street. A 20-year-old suspect was arrested.
- Late the night prior — on Saturday, July 5 — three people were shot in the 200 block of North Caldwell Street. Two of the victims died.
Here's a breakdown of the crime statistics in Central Division:
- The number of homicides was unchanged: There were three this year and last year in the Central Division. Citywide, homicides are down 29%.
- Overall, aggravated assaults declined 2%, with 96 and 98 offenses in the 2025 and 2024 mid-year data sets, respectively. Firearm assaults were unchanged, with 57 each time. But stabbings rose 22% to 22 this year, up from 18.
- There have been fewer rapes in the first half of 2025. While nine were reported in the first half of 2024, the 2025 stats show six.
- Residential burglary is notably down, falling 58%, from 51 to 21. But commercial burglary is up 6.4%. Shoplifting also increased 26%.
- Vehicle theft is up 25.8%, and larceny from auto rose 3.3%.
