Charlotte is getting more robots: Walmart will soon use drones to drop off groceries and other products to some households.
Why it matters: Drone delivery is about to become the new normal in Charlotte.
- Walmart announced Thursday it's expanding its drone delivery service to 100 stores across five cities: Charlotte, Atlanta, Houston, Orlando and Tampa.
Catch up quick: Last month, Alphabet's drone company Wing and DoorDash began delivering food orders via drone in a limited four-mile radius around The Arboretum in south Charlotte.
How it works: Wing and Walmart have not shared the exact Walmart locations yet, but people will be able to see if their address is eligible for drone delivery at wing.com/walmart.
- The drone flies up to 65 miles per hour to reach its destination. It then lowers the package to wherever the customer specified while checking out, such as the home's front or back yard.
- It's unclear when the new drone delivery will launch locally.
Zoom out: Walmart is also expanding its air delivery in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, where drones already fly out of 18 stores. An average fulfillment takes under 19 minutes, according to a press release from the companies.
- The service has helped Dallas-Fort Worth earn the title of the U.S. drone capital. Now, North Carolina is also emerging as a national leader in drone integration because of its favorable state policies.
- "People all around the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex have made drone delivery part of their normal shopping habits over the past year," says Wing CEO Adam Woodworth.
Fun fact: Some of the top ordered products via drone are fresh fruit, Great Value eggs, pet food and ice cream, the companies say.
- The service is typically used for ingredients forgotten during grocery trips or items like baby formula, cold medicine and COVID tests.
