Nearly ten ICE operations were conducted on Monday in the Charlotte area, according to WFAE race and equity reporter Julian Berger. At least three others were detained Tuesday morning, according to nonprofit Comunidad Colectiva.
Why it matters: One of Monday's arrests happened about half a mile from Charlotte East Language Academy. Witnesses told WFAE the man who was arrested was taking a child to school when he was stopped by agents.
What they're saying: "Our students deserve safety, dignity, and peace of mind βΒ regardless of immigration status," the school's PTA said in a statement, urging the school board to "take a clear, public stance."
"CMS released clear guidance...outlining the procedures all schools must follow in the event of any ICE presence...Unfortunately, we cannot control what happens outside of our schools," Charlotte Mecklenburg School board member Liz Monterrey Duvall said in a statement.
Between the lines: The majority of arrests this week were made in east Charlotte, an area with a large Latino population.
