Charlotte Padel Club is partnering with Sports Connection, a sports and family entertainment center, to expand padel in Charlotte.
Why it matters: Padel, a racquet sport that players describe as a combination of tennis and squash, is on the rise, but courts are still hard to come by.
Driving the news: Charlotte Padel Club expects to break ground on six to eight new covered courts later this summer at Sports Connection's Pickleball Charlotte location in south Charlotte (8401 Sharon Lakes Road).
- They also plan to add indoor courts in the North Lake area (8626 Hankins Road) in the next year.
By the numbers: Miguel Correa expects building 10 covered courts to cost roughly $1.5 million.
Context: Husband and wife duo Miguel Correa and Raquel Correa couldn't find padel courts when they moved to Charlotte from Miami six years ago. They decided to build their own.
- Expanding allows Charlotte Padel Club to host more events and for people to play regardless of weather conditions, says Miguel Correa.
- Today, they have six outdoor courts at the Matthews Tennis & Swim Club (2110 Pleasant Plains Road) just outside I-485 and two indoor courts at Pickleball Charlotte.
- Charlotte Padel Club has grown to more than 200 members. Find details about court reservations here and memberships here.
The big picture: Pickleball has dominated the racquet sport scene in recent years, but more and more people are picking up padel, like former Carolina Panther Tre Boston.
