All Charlotte Mecklenburg Library (CML) branches will close April 18-23 for a scheduled software update.
Why it matters: The new software will help library staff manage and check out materials and visitors to place holds. Temporary changes will affect library users starting this month.
What to expect: Starting March 22, you'll be able to check out physical materials for six weeks, an extension from the typical three-week deadline, which will resume on April 12.
- Starting April 1, all library branches will have limited services in-person and online. You won't be able to sign up for a library card, place holds on books or other library materials, request an interlibrary loan, or make suggestions for library purchases. You'll be able to resume placing holds on April 23.
- Online event registration will be unavailable starting April 4. You won't be able to log into your library account starting April 11.
- Starting April 13, you won't be able to request something from one branch to be picked up at another branch.
- CML won't be able to process returned materials between April 13 and 23, so items you have checked out will remain on your account until then. CML doesn't charge late fees and would prefer you hold onto your checked-out materials until they can process returns again.
- Branches and book drops will be closed starting April 18. Book drops will reopen April 22, and branches will reopen April 23.
- Library services will be limited and adjusted until May 5, when the library expects to resume normal operations.
The bottom line: These temporary changes might be inconvenient, but the upgrades are expected to make the library "more efficient," according to a statement on their website.
