Steph Curry named Davidson basketball assistant general manager

Steph Curry has been named assistant general manager at his alma mater — Davidson College.

Why it matters: Charlotte's favorite son, the Golden State Warriors superstar and an Olympic gold medalist, continues to shine a spotlight on Davidson.

Curry is also the first active player in U.S. major professional sports to be in an administrative role with an NCAA team, ESPN reported.

Driving the news: Curry, his wife Ayesha Curry and the Berman family (Matt, Don and Erica Berman) will create an eight-figure fund to support Davidson's men's and women's basketball programs, according to the college.

This will be called the Curry-Berman Fund.

Between the lines: Curry and Matt Berman (a 2005 Davidson alum) will serve as volunteer assistant general managers for Davidson basketball. These positions are advisory roles.

Curry graduated from Davidson in 2022. He left early for the NBA draft in 2009.

The big picture: This is Davidson's answer to the shifting college sports landscape.

The school also hired Austin Buntz as general manager and assistant athletic director for basketball development. Buntz was part of Under Armour's global basketball sports marketing team until 2021 when he joined Davidson.

What they're saying: "The goal for this is to invest in the next student athlete that's coming into Davidson today," Curry said in a statement.
