Atrium Health last week held a topping out— a ceremonial event marking the completion of a building's structural framework — for its new 12-story tower in Dilworth, which will include a new emergency department meant to alleviate overcrowding at other ERs.
Why it matters: The expansion at Carolinas Medical Center will feature new medical technology and will help meet the demands of the growing regional population, Axios' Alex Sands has reported.
The 1.1 million-square-foot facility expansion will offer:
A new ER
Nearly 450 patient rooms
More than 50 operating and procedure rooms
A new helipad
Dedicated space on each floor for teammate health and well-being
New pedestrian bridges and walkways
Outdoor connectivity along the renovated greenway
What they're saying: "This is more than just a building; it's a testament to the lives we're privileged to impact and the futures we're honored to help shape," said Ken Haynes, president of the Southeast Region for Advocate Health, of which Atrium Health is a part.
What's next: Construction is expected to be completed in 2027, per Atrium.
