Salt & Souls, a locally owned salt cave and spa, recently opened on The Plaza.
Why it matters: Charlotte's alternative wellness scene continues to grow. This past year, the city has gained contrast therapy studios, viral head spas, and now a spa dedicated to salt therapy.
How it works: Salt therapy, or halotherapy, involves inhaling microscopic salt particles dispersed into the air by a halogenerator, explains owner Jenna Morcos.
- The process is believed to break down mucus, reduce inflammation, and clear airway passages, making it beneficial for respiratory issues like allergies, asthma and colds.
- Salt particles also land on your skin, which may help relieve eczema and psoriasis symptoms.
- Beyond physical benefits, the relaxing environment of a salt cave is thought to reduce stress and anxiety.
- No effort is required—just breathe. Sessions last 45 minutes.
What to expect: The main feature is the community salt cave, which seats up to eight people. Guests relax in zero-gravity chairs surrounded by Himalayan salt walls and floors.

There's also:
- A private salt room (coming soon): Accommodates up to three participants.
- A salt booth: A 10-minute express version of the salt cave.
- Facials, massages and energy healing: Booked separately with the spa's team of estheticians and massage therapists.

What they're saying: Morcos, a pharmacist in Charlotte for over 20 years, discovered her passion for alternative wellness during visits to Asheville's salt caves.
- "I kept waiting for something like this [to open in Charlotte]," she said. "Then I was like, maybe I should be the one to do it."
Zoom out: While Salt & Souls is one of the area's only dedicated salt spas, several nearby wellness centers offer halotherapy, including:
- The Invigory (South End and Waverly)
- OM Spa (Eastover)
- Woodhouse Spa (SouthPark)
- KUR Health Spa (Park Road)
- Arden Salt Room and Sauna (Denver, NC)
Between the lines: Halotherapy is a form of alternative medicine, but it's gaining popularity — even making appearances in pop culture, like Hulu's "Secret Lives of Mormon Wives."
If you go: Salt & Souls is in soft-opening mode while finishing construction on the private salt room. Currently, the community salt room, booth and facials are available for booking.
- A drop-in session for the community salt room is $40.
- Five-session packs are $175, and monthly memberships start at $99.
- Kids under 12 are free.

My thought bubble: I'm not salty about having this spot open in my neighborhood. And if you're a year-round allergy sufferer like me, I can attest one trip had me breathing clear (and feeling super relaxed).
What's next: The grand opening will be Dec. 8 from 12-4pm.
- Eventually, Jenna says she plans to hold wellness events, like yoga classes and acupuncture pop-ups, in the cave.
