A record number of people will run the Charlotte Marathon this year

By the numbers: More than 9,000 runners have signed up for the the marathon, half marathon, rucking half marathon, full and half marathon relays and the 5K, which all take place on Saturday, Nov. 16.

• That's a record number of runners, organizers tell Axios.
• The previous record was 8,580 runners in 2010.

Flashback: Last year, the race brought in just under $2 million in economic impact, race director Tim Rhodes tells Axios.

• The race has grown 33% compared to 2023.

If you go: Expect traffic delays and road closures around Uptown, South End, Dilworth and Plaza Midwood.

• The race starts on Tryon St. at Brooklyn Village Avenue heading south. The finish line is on Fourth Street between Mint Street and Graham Street.
• Runners will be in corrals for the first time, meaning they'll start at their expected pace (such as a 10-minute mile).
• Running may not be for you, but you can still cheer them on and make a sign. Find a cheer station and the course map here.

• 7:20am: Marathon, half marathon, rucking and relays
• 7:35am: 5K

My thought bubble: Please don't tell a runner they're "almost there" at anything less than mile 26. A marathon is 26.2 miles.

What's next: Rhodes says he could see the event expanding beyond 10,000 participants in future years.

The big picture: Running is certainly having a moment across the globe. Couple that with 117 people move here every day and you have the recipe for a blossoming running scene.
