Green defeats Morrow in state superintendent race

Mo Green, the former superintendent of Guilford County Schools, defeated Michele Morrow in a high-profile race for North Carolina superintendent.

Why it matters: This normally quiet race was thrown into the national spotlight because of controversies surrounding Morrow, who called the public school system a failure.

Green won on a much tamer campaign that was more celebratory of teachers and the education system but acknowledged that it's "woefully" underfunded.

By the numbers: Green won 51.03% of the vote to Morrow's 48.97% as of 12:53am.

Between the lines: Green faces the challenge of leading a public school system that officials describe as "hemorrhaging" and "suffocated" by strapped budgets and a dwindling teacher base.

Catch up quick: Green was formerly the executive director of the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation and once the general counsel for the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education.

Morrow is a homeschool teacher and nurse who attended the Jan. 6, 2021, rally in Washington, D.C. The North Carolina Chamber of Commerce quickly labeled her an extremist after her primary win against Republican sitting superintendent Catherine Truitt.
