Dairy-free ice cream shop Seemingly Overzealous expanding to Plaza Midwood

A new dairy-free ice cream shop is opening in Plaza Midwood this Saturday, Nov. 16.
Why it matters: Seemingly Overzealous opened in Camp North End in May 2023, offering unique flavors of gluten-, dairy- and egg-free ice cream. Its new spot in Plaza Midwood will be more than twice the size of the original shop, and it'll offer new menu items.
Dig in: In honor of its grand opening, there'll be 20 different flavors of dairy-, egg- and gluten-free ice cream, served on gluten-free waffle cones.
- Popular flavors include "i NEEDED SOMEONE TO FEED" (brown sugar cinnamon) and "CAN'T ALL BE COOKiE" (cookies & cream).
- They'll also have gluten-free cookies on opening day and non-alcoholic beverages.
The vibe: The 1,200-square-foot shop features work from local artists, including a mural by Eulises 'Eulizerd' Orellana on the back wall.
- Inside are plenty of seats and an eight-foot Lite Brite for kids to play with.
Flashback: Seemingly Overzealous is a pandemic success story both business and love.
- Garrett Tichy (of Hygge and Lokal), picked up ice cream-making and soon connected with Jessica Berresse over their mutual fandom of the sweet treat on their first date.
- After sharing their homemade dessert with friends and selling out online, they decided to take their relationship (with ice cream) to the next level.
The intrigue: Seemingly Overzealous also has a camper that the owners take to events. "We're currently looking for a semi-permanent home at a brewery that serves food but could use a dessert truck in regular rotation," Tichy tells Axios.
What's next: Seemingly Overzealous will open at 1308 The Plaza, where Cold Hearted Gelato used to be.
- Its hours of operation are Wednesday-Thursday from 12-9pm; Friday-Saturday from 12-10pm; and Sunday from 12-7pm. Closed Mondays and Tuesdays.
- In 2025, they'll add shakes and ice cream flights to their menu, Tichy tells Axios.
If you go: On opening day, it'll open at 1pm because of road closures due to the Charlotte Marathon.
- The first 50 customers will get a custom-designed freezer tote by North Carolina-based artist Nadia Hassan.
