Scammers are using AI to clone voices, our news partners at WBTV report.
Why it matters: Many financial institutions and other stewards of people's most sensitive data lean heavily on phone calls to verify identities, says Axios' Sam Sabin.
Using low-cost AI tools, scammers can now easily impersonate someone's voice and hijack ongoing conversations to steal funds and other information.
How it works: "If you get a spam phone call ... and they're recording your voice and they get multiple clips, they can then use those clips to clone your voice," according to cybersecurity expert Thomas Hyslip.
Scammers will then use that voice clone to make phone calls or trick voice recognition.
