Muddy River Distillery recently opened in a new location in Mount Holly.
Why it matters: Carolina's first rum distillery now lives inside the oldest standing mill in Gaston County, per its owners Robbie and Caroline Delaney.
Flashback: In 2011, Muddy River Distillery started as an at-home alcohol-making hobby and quickly grew from borderline obsession to a full-blown business in less than a year, Axios wrote in 2015 (Charlotte Agenda at the time).
Back then, they were churning out 300 bottles a day. Today, their product line has grown to include Silver, Spiced, Coffee, Basil, Coconut, and their Queen Charlotte Rum at North Carolina's ABC stores, many South Carolina packaging stores and as far north as Canada.
The vibe: The new home will serve as a distillery, cocktail bar and event space.
MRD will have seasonal cocktails and cocktail classes, plus larger events like music and food festivals.
