Shanté Williams will becomeOpera Carolina's new general director. Williams, a venture capitalist, succeeds James Meena, who currently serves as the organization's general director and principal conductor.
Why it matters: Williams will be the first person of color and the first woman to lead the organization.
Context: Williams, a Charlotte native who has served on Opera Carolina's board, is CEO of Black Pearl Vision and global CEO of its parent company, Black Pearl Global Investments, a $25 million venture capital fund.
What they're saying: "Opera Carolina's remarkable 75-year history of excellence in opera, education and community leadership make it one of the premier arts organizations in North Carolina," Williams said in a statement.
What's next: Williams' position is effective July 1. She will focus on the business side. Meena will remain with the organization and serve as artistic director.
Opera Carolina's 75th season begins with legendary Italian singer Andrea Bocelli performing a benefit concert at Belk Theater on Oct. 30.
