El Puro Cuban Restaurant recently brought on a new chef who updated the restaurant's brunch, lunch and dinner menus.
Why it matters: El Puro is one of Charlotte's best restaurants, known for its modern take on traditional Cuban cuisine. It's owned by Cuban immigrants who also own Havana Carolina Restaurant & Bar in Concord.
Zoom in: Chef Carlos Nevarez was born in Puerto Rico and raised in Miami, surrounded by Cuban influences his entire life.
Before moving to Charlotte, he worked as the executive chef for Soho House Austin and at renowned hotels and restaurants throughout his 23 years as a chef.
Dig in: Of the new brunch menu items, we tried the guajiro Benedict (poached eggs with tostones and shredded pork), the disco Benedict (poached eggs with croquetas and cheese) and the torrejas (a type of French toast, served with guava and cream cheese).
