Romantic comedy filmed at Queens University of Charlotte hits streaming platforms on Nov. 10

What’s happening: “The Other Zoey,” a new romantic comedy from Brainstorm Media, was filmed around North Carolina, with Charlotte as the anchor location.

Catch up quick: It takes place in Myers Park on Queens University’s campus, in Davidson at Main Street Books and Appalachian Ski Mountain in Blowing Rock. Filming took place in late 2021 and early 2022.

• Queens’ name and logo appear throughout the film, a university spokesperson tells Axios.

Driving the news: The film, which had a limited theatrical release, will be available for streaming in the United States starting Friday, Nov. 10. You can find it on Amazon, Apple TV, Vudu, Google Play/YouTube Movies.

Why it matters: The film puts Charlotte in the spotlight.

• Projects have been returning to North Carolina over the years after the House Bill 2, also known as the “bathroom bill,” sent the film industry packing in 2016, as Axios’ Alexandria Sands previously reported. One recent notable example is “Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret,” which was filmed around Charlotte.

Details: The movie follows Zoey Miller, played by Josephine Langford. She’s a student at Queens. Everything turns upside down when the school’s star soccer player Zach, played by Drew Starkey, gets amnesia and thinks Zoey is his girlfriend. Zoey ends up in a love triangle between Zach and his cousin Miles, played by Archie Renaux.

What they’re saying: The movie allows Queens students to see their university on the big screen, Laura Kratt, Queens executive director of the Sarah Belk Gambrell Center for the Arts & Civic Engagement, tells Axios. 

What’s next: Queens will host a campus premiere of the film on Thursday, Nov. 9, at 7pm at the Sarah Belk Gambrell Center (2319 Wellesley Ave.). Doors open at 6:30pm and there will be a dance performance and student activities prior to the screening.

• Both students and community members are welcome to attend.
• The screening is free, but you need to register for tickets.
