BW Sweets Bakery, a popular Black-owned bakery whose owner competed in the Food Network’s “Girl Scout Cookie Championship,” closed its retail location.

Yes, but: Soon you’ll find their desserts at local and chain restaurants and grocery stores, the owners announced in an Instagram post.

  • BW Sweets Bakery will strictly offer delivery now.

Why it matters: Businesses across Charlotte have struggled to keep up since the pandemic. Some have closed their doors permanently, while others like BW Sweets, have found ways to pivot.

What they’re saying: “As we have continued to try to find ways to navigate costs via payroll and food costs in general, it’s been tough,” BW Sweets owner Frankie White tells Axios.

What’s next: Expect an announcement about the grocer BW Sweets is partnering with in the coming days. You’ll find cake slices and whole cakes, brownies, cheesecakes and cupcakes to start, White tells Axios.

  • He says the opportunity to work with the grocer presented itself very quickly and he knew it wouldn’t be feasible to maintain their own retail presence and provide baked goods for their new partner.
  • “I had to make a very quick decision,” White tells Axios.

Zoom out: Part of that decision included deciding not to pursue its planned location at 2023 Beatties Ford Road, near Archive, a coffee shop celebrating Black culture, which also serves the bakery’s sweets.
