Sugar Lounge is Uptown’s newest late-night spot, serving non-alcoholic drinks until 4am

Sugar Lounge is a coffee shop during the day and a mocktail and hookah bar at night.

It’s open from 9am-2pm and then again from midnight to 4am. “We host events during the day,” Sugar Lounge partner Jarell Garrett said, adding that anybody can book the Uptown venue.

Why it matters: Alcohol alternatives are on the rise in Charlotte. And although there are plenty of bars serving alcohol-free drinks, a social club dedicated to the “Counterculture” of sobriety and even a non-alcoholic festival in Charlotte, an entire bar dedicated to serving N/A beverages is a first for the city.

  • “I want [this place] to be a community-centered venue,” Garrett said, “where people can come up with their own ideas and have a place to host.”

Details: Sugar Lounge opened on March 1, just steps away from the Spectrum Center, as first reported by the Charlotte Observer.

  • They serve non-alcoholic cocktails ($5-$10), wine ($4.50) and beer ($2-$4). Other beverages include smoothies ($6) and coffee ($1.50-$4).
  • Sugar Lounge also has hookahs and a CBD vending machine, “which we can put away for events with younger crowds like sweet sixteens,” Garrett said.
  • The address is 231 N. Caldwell St.

The vibe: It’s moody, dim, bar with chill music playing throughout the day. At night, they host events like live-music karaoke. It’s the kind of place you go to wind down after a wild night out. “Even if people come in feeling rowdy, the atmosphere [in here] isn’t going to make you feel that way,” Garrett said.

  • They hope to host more events in the future, like industry mixers with poetry slams, live art and mixologist collaborations.
