Rejoice, Halal Street Food lovers. The family restaurant is expanding to Camp North End on Wednesday, April 24.

Why it matters: Halal Food Cart has been an Uptown staple since 2016 when husband and wife duo Khuram and Damaris Bashir launched the cart.

Context: They opened their first brick-and-mortar at 4044 Connection Point Blvd. in MoRa Point in 2022.

  • Now their son, Cristopher Collado, will lead their Camp North End expansion at 701 Keswick Ave.

What to expect: The same Halal dishes you know and love, like chicken and lamb over rice, kabobs, gyros and hummus, pita and plenty of white sauce.

  • New menu items will include falafel, salads, vegan options, plus breakfast and desserts.
  • The atmosphere will reference the original cart truck. There will be indoor and outdoor seating.

Zoom in: Halal Street Food’s wildly popular food cart has been a mainstay on North Tryon for years.

  • Its popularity lies in its blend of Dominican and Pakistani flavors.
  • “My parents didn’t speak the same language when they first met,” Collado says in a statement. “It’s a love story and you can taste it in the food.”

Go deeper: “Halal white sauce” was Charlotte’s top recipe on Google in 2022.

Editor's note: This story was originally published in March 2023 and updated on April 22, 2024 to reflect the new opening date.
