Girl Scout cookie season is here.

What’s happening: Cookie season is underway through April, with exact times schedules varying by location.

Why it matters: The program teaches girls financial literacy and entrepreneurial skills. Girl Scouts are also using the Digital Cookie, which they launched in 2014. It allows them to take in-person orders using an app or to direct customers to a personalized cookie website.

  • “Financial literacy is not only a critical skill required for entrepreneurship, but an essential life skill,” Girl Scout USA chief revenue officer Wendy Lou said in a statement.

Details: You can purchase cookies in-person and online. Place your zip code in the cookie finder to locate cookies near you.

  • Let’s use South End as an example. When you type in 28203, Girl Tribe at 1800 Camden Road is one of your many options. You can swing by on Feb. 19 from 12-4pm.

Context: Charlotte-based Girl Scouts, Hornets’ Nest Council (GSHNC) serves 8,000 girls and adults in eight counties in the Carolinas, including Mecklenburg.

By the numbers: Around 200 million boxes of cookies are sold each cookie season, which is about $800 million worth of cookies, per Girl Scouts of the USA.

Of note: Thin Mints are the most popular Girl Scout cookie, along with Samoas (Carmel deLites) and Tagalongs (Peanut Butter Patties).

What’s next: You’ll be able to buy cookies online and have them shipped directly to you starting on Feb. 27 using the cookie finder.

  • They’re rolling out a 13th flavor this year called Raspberry Rally, which will be available online only.
