Johnston YMCA
Starting Feb. 1, the Johnston YMCA in NoDa will start charging for parking.
What’s happening: The Y is numbering its parking spaces at the Johnston facility on North Davidson. Members and guests accessing the Y during operating hours will have free parking for up to three hours. Spots 40 and up are reserved for them, per the Y. Outside the Y’s operating hours, those spots will be open to the paying public.
- Spots 1-39 will be open for paid public parking 24/7.
- Paid public parking spots will cost $10 for three hours and $15 for 10 hours.
Why it matters: The Johnston Y is notorious for its strict parking guidelines — previously the lot was only open to members, and often, those without a parking pass would be ticketed or towed.
- What’s more, parking in NoDa — as is the case in other popular neighborhoods like South End — is becoming increasingly hard to come by amid all the construction underway.
These are the Johnston Y’s operating hours:
- Monday-Thursday: 6am-9pm
- Friday: 6am-8pm
- Saturday: 8am-4pm
- Sunday: 10am-4pm
What they’re saying: “Members and guests of the Y are having increasing trouble finding parking spaces because our lot, though private property, is filling frequently for public use,” per a statement from the Johnston Y on its website.
Zoom out: The parking changes come as the Y weighs plans for the future of the Johnston property, which dates back to the early 1950s. YMCA of Greater Charlotte plans a major redevelopment of the site, creating an “enduring neighborhood hub,” though Y officials have said they hope the Y will maintain a presence there.
