The Hispanic Heritage Festival of the Carolinas will be held at Truist Field in Uptown Charlotte on Saturday, Sept. 17.
It’ll have food, music, art and vendors celebrating all Hispanic backgrounds — from Central and South America to the Caribbean.
Driving the news: Sept. 15 marks the first day of Hispanic Heritage Month.
Why it matters: Charlotte is becoming a melting pot like other large cities, and in celebrating Hispanic cultures it is embracing its largest growing population.
- Large enough to attract musicians like Bad Bunny, Karol G, and now Grammy award winning Puerto Rican singer Elvis Crespo, who typically reserves appearances in cities like Miami and Los Angeles. “He’s never been to North Carolina or South Carolina,” said David Padilla, chief marketing officer for the event, “so it took some convincing.”
- Plus, it’s an opportunity for Hispanic people to do what we do best: Party. “I mean, have you ever heard the intro to “Suavemente” and not sprinted to the dance floor?” Padilla said laughing.
What to expect: Between 7,000-10,000 people are expected to attend, according to Padilla.
- There’ll be food stands selling Dominican, Colombian, Cuban and Mexican food. “But traditional style, not TexMex,” Padilla said, “very authentic.” He also confirmed El Puro will have a food stand.
- Artisans will sell handmade crafts from Colombia, Ecuador and Peru.
- There’ll be several musicians performing including DJ OSOCITY, and popular bachata group Monchy, all leading up to the headliner Elvis Crespo.
Details: The inaugural Hispanic Heritage Festival will be from 3-10pm.
- All ages are welcome and children under eight get in free.
- Tickets range from $20-$100.
“This will be any event the city does not want to miss,” Padilla said.
