Our team knows where to find good food in Charlotte.
We’ve put together a quick list of the 7 tastiest things we ate in August, listed in no particular order.
1. ‘Old Skool’ Breakfast Bowl from Tupelo Honey in Uptown

I hit up Tupelo Honey before Charlotte Pride in Uptown solely because of proximity. Even though it was a busy day, I was able to sit at the bar with my friend after a short wait. We shared the “Biscuits for a cause” because we’ve heard the biscuits there are amazing and I can confirm that they are. As an added bonus, proceeds go to the restaurant’s relief and development fund that helps employees in need. As my main dish I ordered the ‘Old Skool’ breakfast bowl. I’m not a huge grits fan but this was delicious. It’s also big enough to share. — Laura Barrero, reporter

2. Haddock n’ chips from Big Ben

Cool vibes along with good food, right off the Gold Line. I ordered the haddock n’ chips ($16) and can attest that the shrimp n’ chips ($15) is also very good. — Alex Sands, reporter

3. Dol sot bi bim bob from Pepero

Pepero is hidden in the back of a Korean grocery store in Matthews. Their dol sot bi bim bob, which comes in a hot pot, is flavorful and filled with veggies, beef and rice. I love to let the rice sit in the hot pot until the bottom is crispy. — Danielle Chemtob, investigative reporter

4. Ice cream from Two Scoops Creamery

Two scoops of double chocolate ice cream with rainbow sprinkles in a waffle cone from Two Scoops Creamery in Plaza Midwood. It was the perfect way to say farewell to summer, which was more of a symbolic gesture than anything else since this is the South, and it’s still toasty out there. — Ashley Mahoney, reporter

5. Grogu from Mariposa

OK so maybe this doesn’t fit the bill of what we ate but it sure was refreshing and delicious. This cute lil cocktail ($14) is made with Ketel One, cucumber water and lime. The perfect adult beverage to pair with brunch. I visited Mariposa over Pride weekend and can say it’s as special during the day as it is at night. — Katie Peralta Soloff, editor

6. Monster Shake at Mattie’s Diner
This $14 sugar-loaded fruity pebbles milkshake at Mattie’s Diner comes topped with a cake donut, marshmallows and a frosted waffle. I also tried “The Junkyard” homefry bowl and the disco fries with mozzarella and gravy. It’s delicious, and also a recipe for food coma. — Emma Way, deputy managing editor, Axios Local

7. Seafood baskets and rolls, with hush honeys, from Saltbox

And here’s one outside Charlotte. Michael Graff and Emma traveled a few hours north to eat at Saltbox in Durham for a couple of reasons: 1. We love seafood. 2. We had to see how Saltbox chef Ricky Moore beat out Charlotte’s Greg Collier for a James Beard Award this year.
- Charlotte loyalists, we have to tell you, Saltbox is incredible. We had bluefish, flounder, grouper, shrimp and of course the hush honeys — honey hushpuppies. Our takeaway: We’re still gonna stand by our guy Chef Greg and say he should’ve won the James Beard honor, but we’re dreaming of our next train ride to Durham, too.
- The bottom line: We’re lucky to live in this state. (Read Michael’s full Saltbox review from Axios Raleigh.)
