Marijuana is still illegal in North Carolina but there are some legal ways to celebrate 4/20 in Charlotte.
Background: 4/20 is the unofficial stoner holiday. Legend has it, the codename “4/20” initially started out as an inside joke between a few California teenagers in the 1970s, who would meet up at 4:20pm every day to smoke weed.
Why it matters: Congress is taking steps toward decriminalizing cannabis, and state lawmakers are considering a medical marijuana bill.
- And people are here for it. A 2021 Pew study found that 91% of Americans believe recreational and medical-use marijuana should be legal, up from 41% in 2012.
Zoom out: Delta-8 THC, which is the closest you’ll get to legal weed in NC, has grown in popularity over the years and may be the only recreational option if federal legalization of marijuana doesn’t happen.
The bottom line: Whether you choose to partake or not, here are a few events happening around town to celebrate.
1. Support a local Cannabis shop
Delta-8 and CBD are available at most smoke shops and even many bottle shops like Rhino Market and Common Market. Stores have a variety of products like gummies, vapes and pre-rolls.
- Greenlife Remedies has a wide variety of products also available online.

The celebration lasts all week long with yoga and trivia and ends on Saturday with a movie night. All events include a munchie bag.
4. Get smoked out at Triple C Brewing
The 420 smoke off consists of delicious smoked barbecue and sides from Jon G’s. There will also be pop ups featuring Infinity End’s Smoke Shop and Gold Cow Creamery.
