Sumaq Coffee is a locally owned coffee shop and bakery located on South Blvd by the Archdale Station.
It soft-opened last week, and it was so successful that the owners decided to extend its hours of operation.
Why it matters: With its modern design and bright concept, the coffee shop changes the face of the neighborhood.
- While sitting there last week, three separate people wandered in, marveling at the cool clean space, asking how long they’ve been open.
Context: Sumaq is a labor of love by two brothers Joseph and Nick Castro, who are originally from Colombia. They own the photography studio in the same building, and once the studio became successful, they started brainstorming ideas to transform the rest of the space.
- Their goal, Nick tells me, is to bring flavors of South America to Charlotte. They even got permission from popular Colombian cake shop, Le Sucré, to recreate their popular dessert jars in Charlotte.
- The word “Sumaq” (pronounced “sue-mock’) stems from the Quechua language of the indigenous people of Peru and other parts of South America. It means “something gorgeous, and beautiful,” according to Nick.
Details: You can expect craft Colombian coffee, sandwiches, desserts, gluten-free options, all made in-house from local ingredients.
Hours: Tuesday through Sunday from 9am to 5pm.
Location: 6259 South Blvd.
