Charlotte is one of the cities in the running to host a future Army-Navy game, the Charlotte Sports Foundation confirmed to Axios Tuesday.

The college football game has been played 122 times but never in the South, the Orlando Sentinel first reported. Other cities trying to land the game include Orlando, Boston, Chicago and Dallas, per the Sentinel.

Game organizers will visit Charlotte and Bank of America Stadium, CSF also confirmed.

  • It’s unclear when the visit will occur and when a decision about the game’s location will come.

Why it matters: Army-Navy is one of the most important rivalries in college sports, an annual showcase of football and patriotism and pushups. Sitting presidents and other high-profile politicians often attend the game. Philadelphia has been the most frequent host.

“Being in consideration to host the Army Navy game is exciting for Charlotte and the region,” said Danny Morrison, CSF executive director. “With the state’s military history and the city’s ability to host world-class events, we believe the Charlotte Sports Foundation has a compelling case to bring America’s Game to Charlotte.”

Zoom out: CSF helps put on some of Charlotte’s most high-profile sporting events, from the ACC Championship football game to the Duke’s Mayo Bowl.

  • Last summer, CSF and Jordan Brand signed a three-year deal for a major men’s and women’s college basketball tournament called the Jumpman Invitational. This year, it’ll take place December 20-21.
