Stranded by American Airlines

What’s happening: As of midday Monday, American Airlines has canceled 2,291 flights since Friday, spokesperson Andrew Trull confirmed to Axios. The airline canceled over 1,000 flights on Sunday alone, representing more than 20% of its total flights.

• Most of the canceled flights were ones going to and from American’s main hub, Dallas/Fort Worth, per NPR, as well as Charlotte. American operates roughly 90% of daily flights at CLT, its second-largest hub.
• As of noon, American had canceled 36 flights at Charlotte Douglas Monday, according to Trull.
• There are no current impacts to Tuesday’s schedule at CLT, he added.

The company cited severe winds in the Dallas/Fort Worth area and a crew shortage as the reasons behind the cancelations, according to a letter to employees Saturday.

• American said it is rebooking most customers on flights the same day. “We apologize for having to make these changes,” the airline said in the letter.
• “We expect considerable improvement beginning tomorrow (Monday) with some residual impact from the weekend,” Trull said Sunday evening.

American canceled 266 total flights at Charlotte Douglas between Oct. 29-31, he said.

Angry customers took to social media upon learning of their cancelations over the weekend.

• “American is quite useless in aiding customers (past and present experience). Every electronic option ends in a dead end. Useless,” tweeted customer Jim Boden, whose AA flight from Philadelphia-Charlotte flight was canceled over the weekend.
• “When my connecting flight to DFW was cancelled yesterday in Charlotte, the line to speak with a customer service agent was soul crushing,” said another customer, Howard Jackson.

Flashback: Blaming “operational challenges” like air-traffic control issues and bad weather, Southwest canceled about 1,900 flights the second weekend of October, as Axios’ Jacob Knutson wrote.

Our thought bubble: I flew to Chicago over the weekend to watch Notre Dame crush Carolina in South Bend (!!) Great game; not so great travel day Sunday. American canceled two of our flights without any explanation.

My husband and I for now are planning to fly home early afternoon Monday. If that doesn’t happen, a cross-country roadtrip may be in our future.
