Jason and Kelly Cowan brought a piece of the west coast back to Charlotte with Burr & Berry Coffee, a drive-thru and walk-up coffee shop. The husband and wife duo opened their first location inside the city limits on Oct. 19.
Details: Burr & Berry Coffee‘s latest spot sits at 4209 South Boulevard, and is open Monday-Sunday from 7am until 5pm. They will open at 6 am starting Nov. 1. The first location opened in June 2019 in Indian Land, S.C.
Signature drinks include:
- The bee’s knees latte with honey and brown sugar cinnamon.
- Carolina blonde latte with white chocolate and Carmel drizzle.
- Maui macchiato with coconut and caramel drizzle.
- Chubby bunny, a cold brew with toasted marshmallow cream, white chocolate and caramel drizzle.
More than coffee: Tea, Italian sodas, energy drinks, pastries and oatmeal are also on the menu.
- “Local, fast and kind” is their motto, Jason told Axios.
What’s next: A grand opening will take place within the next four to five weeks, along with the addition of a full patio setup. Hilary Siber Edwards will also paint two murals.
- They are already considering a third space, but haven’t settled on a location.
Flashback: Jason and Kelly got married in Charlotte 20 years ago.
- They spent over a decade in Seattle, where Jason is from.
- Five years ago, they came back with the vision of creating a drive-thru coffee shop.
- “That type of business is really prevalent in the Pacific Northwest,” Jason said. “We just thought, ‘Hey, I bet this would work here.'”
Connecting to their roots: Burr & Berry Coffee serves Whidbey Coffee from Seattle, which brings a piece of home to the business for Jason.
- Everything else is locally sourced, which connects to Kelly’s roots as a native Charlottean.
- “We really try to buy from small, local independent places,” Jason said.
- Local pastries include: Your Mom’s Donuts, Pepperbox Doughnuts, Burney’s Sweets & More and Uncle D’s Southern Donuts.
Bonus: Kelly graduated from Myers Park High School.
