We’re excited to share some good news today: Laura Barrero is the newest member of the Axios Charlotte team. She started Monday as a reporter.
Why it matters: Laura will drive us into the future, faster. She’s a journalist of many talents who’ll have a hand in shaping programming across all our channels — including the daily newsletter that goes out to 100K-plus subscribers each morning, our website, and our 254K-follower Instagram account.
- She’ll produce and write news and lifestyle stories about things that matter to Charlotte readers, from new restaurants to neighborhoods to big breaking news.
Background: She’s spent the past couple of years as a news producer at WBTV, putting together entire 30-minute shows and investigative projects.
- She produced this complex story on the protests in Cuba this summer.
- Before WBTV, she worked at a station in Sarasota, Florida.
What’s more: She was born in Cuba, grew up in Miami, and has bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Florida, for any Gators fans out there.
What she’s saying: “Charlotte may not be where I grew up, but it’s certainly become my home,” Laura says. “Like the city, the way people consume news is changing every day. We want it to be easy to find, we want it to be accurate, and we want it now. Axios does all of that and more. I’m so excited to be part of a team that recognizes the importance of local journalism while disseminating that content in a way that everyone can access and easily digest.”
My thought bubble: Laura’s one of the brightest, most dynamic journalists in our city. She has great taste, a range of interests, and a hunger to do work that helps you and our growing city. We can’t wait to see what she makes happen here.
