A Lake Wylie house is making its debut on this year’s virtual Mad About Modern Home Tour, which kicks off Sept. 23.
Who: Chuck Burkett and Randy Pender have been together for 40 years (!!) and came to Charlotte in 2014. Chuck has a background in historic preservation and Randy was previously on Belk’s executive team. They’re retired now, and Randy is a self-taught artist.
- Over the years, they’ve always been drawn to older houses with significant architecture, Chuck said.
- Before moving to Charlotte, they lived in an 1800s Georgia farmhouse on 25 acres.

How they got here: When they moved to Charlotte, they lived Uptown at The Vue while they looked for homes. They wanted to find something on the Charlotte side of Lake Wylie.
“We started driving out to look at the different streets and this house was one of the first we saw and decided then it was the one,” Chuck said. “But it wasn’t for sale.”
They set up alerts for the house and stalked it until it hit the market, Randy explained. They were on vacation in Italy when it finally became available, and they went to the house to make an offer straight from the airport.

The house was built in 1958 in true mid-century style. At 1,750 square feet, it has 3 beds and 2 baths.
The main house features a living room, kitchen, two bedrooms (one used as an office) and a recently remodeled bathroom. There’s a separate guest house that Randy uses as his art studio.
Outdoor living: Chuck and Randy added a covered outdoor space that has a ceiling fan, TV, a kitchen and plenty of seating. It overlooks the pool and Lake Wylie — and is where they spend most of their time.
Style: Chuck and Randy have an edited, eclectic style, and their home is filled with art from their travels and furniture they collected over the years.

“We believe if you gather and collect things that you love eventually it will all eventually work together,” Chuck said.
Mid-century design: Chuck and Randy loved the home’s mid-century modern design with the brick, skylights and wood-paneled ceilings. They cared so much about the integrity of the original architecture of the house, they remodeled the kitchen to better fit the way it was, even though the previous owners had recently remodeled it.
- The main house is completely open concept, so you can see the kitchen from most vantage points in the living area.
- Chuck and Randy splurged on a panel-covered fridge, an appliance garage and a waterfall-edge countertop.
Mad About Modern event: The 10th annual home show is virtual this year, celebrating five mid-century modern homes in Charlotte. Tickets are $25 each the tour kicks off Sept. 23.
