Billy and Ruth Graham bought their home in Montreat, about two hours west of Charlotte, in the 1940s. It’s now listed for $599K.
Why it matters: Imagine the stories these walls hold. The Grahams bought the home in the 1940s, around the time the reverend started holding his famous crusades.
The Grahams’ daughter Ruth shed some light on the home’s history in statement shared with Axios.
- “I have many memories of playing in the stream, catching crawdads. Building a ‘castle’ from an old tree stump in the yard. Walking across the road to my grandparents’ home,” she said.
Be smart: The late Rev. Billy Graham was born in 1918 on a farm in Charlotte near what is now Park Road. The evangelist led crusades around the world and became one of most influential Christian evangelicals of all time. He died in 2018. His wife died in 2007.
- In recent years, the Montreat house has been used as vacation rental.

The exact address is 198 Mississippi Road. At 2,564 square feet, it has 4 beds and 2 baths.
Design: The two-story house is clad with honey-hued shiplap (not the Chip and Joanna Gaines kind, but the built in 1900 kind). It has a cozy stone fireplace, built-ins and large windows that allow the lush forest to shine through.
Ruth said there’s also lots of hidden storage throughout which made the house a “great place for hide and go seek.”
- There’s also a stone outdoor patio with space for a fire pit and outdoor dining and lounge furniture.
- Over the years, there have been updates but no expansions. The last major renovation was about 17 years ago.
Location: Montreat is about 30 minutes from Asheville and has several picturesque walking trails and streams.
