Construction recently began on the two-story brick and concrete Fire Station #2 on South Boulevard in South End. Crews are renovating the space and turning it into a mixed-use development that could house a variety of tenants, from offices to restaurants.
Details: The 6,500-square-foot building is at 1215 South Boulevard, which developer SLT Commercial Properties bought from the city of Charlotte in 2015. The first floor will have roll-up doors that open up to a large covered patio. The second floor will have a covered patio, too.
Timeline: Construction should wrap up in early 2023, according to LPA Urban, which is marketing the project.
Background: Built in 1958, Fire Station #2 opened as an update to the original Fire Station #2 across the street in the building where Re Salon & Med Spa is today, according to LPA. In 1982, the city converted the building into a research and testing facility for the fire department. That’s how it operated until 2015, when the city sold the building.
Zoom out: Fire Station #2 sits in a prime location at the edge of Dilworth in South End, one of the fastest developing, most desirable neighborhoods in the southeast. The area’s growth is evidenced by the thousands of apartments, dozens of new retailers and a growing number of towers popping up.
- The station is next to the site where work will begin soon on the $400 million Centre South development. Boston developer The Fallon Company will convert the 16.7-acre site where Strawn Cottages stood years ago into affordable housing, retail, a hotel and office space.
