During the pandemic pet adoptions have skyrocketed, making already dog-obsessed Charlotte, even more so.
Driving the news: A joint study by Rover and Zillow ranked Charlotte fourth on a list of 15 top emerging dog-friendly cities. This isn’t surprising considering pet adoptions have reached record highs over the last year.
The most popular breed in Charlotte is the Labrador Retriever, according to data from Animal Care and Control. Bully breeds, German Shepards, Chihuahuas and Boxers rounded out the list.
- Other popular breeds include: Beagles, Golden Retrievers, Miniature Poodles and Rottweilers. I was surprised to see Golden Doodles hadn’t made the list yet.
The most popular dog name, also according to AC&C data, is Max. Bella, Buddy, Lucy and Maggie rounded out the top five names.

Yes, but: These figures come from AC&C’s registered dogs. Since we know that not all Charlotteans register their pets, we also know that there may be some popular breeds and names missing from this list. But this still gives us a good idea.
My thought bubble: We should get more creative with dog names. And this is coming from someone who — when charged back in 2008 with naming the family pet, the good-est girl ever whom I miss dearly — chose Lucy.
