New sports bar called Hideaway is now open in west Charlotte

The sports bar and CBD lounge will hold a grand opening event on Juneteenth, but it’s open to customers now.

Why it matters: Located at 2710 Tuckaseegee Road in a historically Black neighborhood, Hideaway is in an area facing significant gentrification. Owner Jay Davis tells me he hopes Hideaway will help maintain a legacy of Black-owned business on the west side.

• “I want to make an impression, even after I’m gone these things will still exist,” Davis tells me.

Business at Lulu’s took off after opening nearby in November 2019, and owners Jay and Miketa Davis are now expanding with a second location on Central Avenue.

Background: Jay and Miketa have had a rollercoaster of a year. While their first business was booming, they also were planning a wedding. And then, in September 2020, they mourned the loss of Jay’s son, Keon.

• Keon was helping Jay with Hideaway’s concept before he passed. Now Jay plans to incorporate his son’s memory into the new restaurant.

Menu: Hideaway’s menu is “nowhere near the same” as Lulu’s, Jay says. Expect classic bar food from burgers to wings. The bar serves creative cocktails, hookah and CBD products. Plus, the restaurant serves breakfast in the morning.

Food and cocktail menu highlights include:

• Hideaway Special Wings: New York style wings tossed in classic buffalo sauce and garlic parmesan.
• Bacon Patty Melt: Served on sourdough with melty Swiss cheese, bacon and house sauce on a beef patty (also offered with brisket).

• Baltimore Raven cocktail: A fittingly purple drink made with vodka, strawberry, lemongrass and blue curacao.
• Bang Bang Shrimp: Classic fried shrimp topped in a tangy bang bang sauce.

Atmosphere: Jay is showing his Baltimore roots in Hideaway. Walking in, you’ll notice a big Baltimore Ravens sign.

• “I’m not saying that no other team can show up, I’m just saying your game may not be the focal point when you come,” he says.

The interior is lined with booths and tables, and there’s also room for a DJ booth. The real excitement is outside, though. The outdoor patio is has it’s own bar and tables, and a flat screen on the way. “I want a place that has amazing vibes,” he says.
