Yes, another new movie is filming in Charlotte

A sign outside the Giant Penny Grocery on The Plaza says it will close on May 5 for “Hollywood filming.”

• Owner Loc Tran tells me this isn’t the first movie that’s filmed at the store. He says “Evergreen Christmas,” which included Greer Grammer, Kelsey Grammer’s daughter; and “Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa” also used the store to film.

“We always support the local community,” Tran says. In addition to being compensated, he enjoys seeing his store on the big screen and giving his employees a day off.

Details: Academy Award winner Marcia Gay Harden and Golden Globe winner Diane Ladd are both part of the “The Evolution of Nate Gibson” cast. Other actors include: Charlie Rowe, Welker White and Sasha Compère.

• Advocacy group Disability Rights & Resources shared a casting call for the film, which was looking for individuals with service animals.

Why it matters: Movie and television productions bring good things with them, specifically jobs and money. After overcoming film tax incentive and HB2 related setbacks, North Carolina’s filming industry is bouncing back.

In Charlotte, “Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret,” an adaptation of the popular Judy Blume novel, is also in production. “Delilah,” an OWN drama based in Charlotte, wrapped up filming earlier this year.
