Renderings: How Charlotte’s skyline is evolving

What’s new: Several properties Uptown, such as the Grand Bohemian and the Home2Suites, have wrapped up construction and opened since 2019, when we last published a look at what the skyline will look like in the future.

Other developments have stalled, including at least three hotels.

• The Moxy: A 208-room Marriott-branded boutique hotel at Brevard and 4th streets. The developer is BPR Properties.
• Intercontinental: The 250-room hotel at the Carolina Theatre site. SB&G Hotel Group of Australia will develop the project.
• Hotel at The Ellis: Concord Hospitality is behind the 211-room hotel at The Ellis site in First Ward.

Why it matters: The skyline is Charlotte’s signature. These new tall buildings going up play an important role in the growth of the city.

• Aesthetically, they’re filling up the skyline, making it bigger and brighter.
• These properties will generate jobs, and they’ll be places where people live, work, shop, gather and play.

We’ve rounded up the biggest developments underway, either planned or under construction, that range from office towers to highly anticipated mixed-use projects. Together, these properties will transform the look of the center city.

Note: Other projects under construction in the area are significant but may not alter the skyline. For instance, the Convention Center is undergoing a $126.9 million overhaul that’ll add more space and a pedestrian walkway.

Charlotte Metro Tower

This is the new 40-story Duke Energy tower at 525 S .Tryon St., in an old parking lot site. By comparison, the Duke Energy Center across the street is 48 stories. In 2019, Childress Klein and CGA Capital bought the property for $675 million. The tower will hold up to 2,000 Duke Energy employees and contractors once construction wraps up in 2022.

Seventh and Tryon

Located at 345 N. College St., this 25-30 story office tower is part of a larger, $600 million redevelopment of the Spirit Square site. The whole project is a public-private effort that includes the city, county, and Metropolitan Partnership, a real estate company in the Washington, D.C. area. Eventually, the redeveloped property will have a walkable plaza, shops, restaurants, parking, residences, and a new main library.

10 Tryon

The proposed 15-story mixed-use building will be anchored by a ground-floor Publix grocery store. It’ll have offices and a rooftop restaurant, too. Its exact address is 10 N. Tryon St. Developer Armada Hoffler Properties is behind the project.

Ally Charlotte Center

Crescent Communities is building a 26-story mixed-use tower at 601 S. Tryon St. that will include 725,000 square feet of office space, ground-level retail, and a public plaza. Ally Financial will anchor the project. Construction is scheduled to wrap up this year.

JW Marriott

The 22-story, 381-room hotel will be at 600 S. College St., on the Ally Charlotte Center property. It’ll also have meeting and event space, plus a restaurant and bar.

FNB Tower

The 29-story office and residential tower is at 401 S. Graham St., close to Truist Field and Bank of America Stadium. It’ll have 196 luxury high-rise units. Dominion Realty Partners is the developer behind the project.

Legacy Union 2

Lincoln Harris’s 18-story glass and steel building will be anchored by Deloitte. It is at 620 S. Tryon, across from the new 33-story Bank of America tower. This is part of the second phase of the Legacy Union development. In addition to office space, this building will also have street-level retail.

The Ellis

The 33-story, 549-unit multifamily residential tower is underway in First Ward, at 524 N. College St. Behind the project is Lennar Corp.’s multi-family division, LMC, which is constructing the development on a property that the Levine family owned for years, CBJ reports.

500 W. Trade

Located at the former Polk building site at Trade and Graham, this 14-story apartment building will have 354 units, two pools, ground floor retail and rooftop wine vault. Developer Northwood Ravin, in partnership with Northwestern Mutual, is behind the project.
