Home Tour: These colorful kids’ rooms will make adults jealous

Danielle McKim and her husband Justin bought their Landsdowne home in July, and it’s nothing short of a colorful dream space. You look at it and you just feel happy — something we can all appreciate in 2020.

Who: McKim and her husband met 16 years ago at Clemson and have been married for 8. They have two kids: Taylor (4) and Andi (1).

McKim has been creating bright spaces for a while. You might remember her business Tuft Interiors, which she ran from 2014 to 2019. Tuft is closed now but she’s used her creativity in her new house.

The house: The house is 2,900 square feet with 4 beds and 3 full baths. It’s an older home with some quirks but it wasn’t an outright fixer-upper, either. “It’s the perfect mix of work needed and completed for my husband and I,” McKim says.

Style: Vintage, modern, eclectic. You’ll find a mix of clean lines, modern fabrics, vintage dressers and tables, mirrors, and lots of art in the McKim house.

Her motto: Buy what you like.

“From working with clients I really found that we can let trends or what we think is the ‘right’ way to design a space make you question all your purchases. You are drawn to things for a reason, it’s your style! Run with that.”

Inspiration: When you buy what you like, you’ll be inspired by your own space, McKim says. “I also have ridiculously talented friends and women I follow on social media that keep the inspiration flowing nonstop,” she adds.

Danielle McKim Home Tour entry — I’ve said it before: The entry sets the tone for the house. McKim’s entry includes all of the hallmarks of her style — vintage dresser, color, art, mirror, lines, and modern lighting.

Danielle McKim Home Tour playroom — The most-used room in the house, this playroom is combination of pretty and useful. It’s got tons of seating, storage, and spaces to be creative (something the McKim family really values).

Shops: Ninety percent of McKim’s furniture is vintage or custom — she either had it reupholstered, built it, or had pieces custom refinished. Many of her pieces are from her former store, Tuft.

She likes Dressing Room Interiors (accessories and furniture); Re:New Home (custom paint); Jackie Rae Studios (pillows and fabric); local thrift stores; Facebook marketplace; and chain retail stores.

Favorite items: The sofa in the playroom room was $2, and then McKim had it custom upholstered. “I must admit this is a little random, but linen sheets and the Dyson (vacuum) were a game-changer for me,” she added.

Danielle McKim Home Tour son's room — McKim wanted to create a room for her son Taylor that felt true to him now but would also give him some room to grow into. His request was to incorporate trains.

Danielle McKim Home Tour son bunk hideaway — For now the nook can be used to read, play, or just hangout. But once gathering is safe again, McKim’s son can use the space for sleepovers.
