311 W. 9th St. home feature
This modern Charleston-inspired home in Uptown has been everything from a quadraplex to a speakeasy. It’s now a single-family home listed at $1.1M.
History: Built in 1933, this Fourth Ward gem was originally a four-unit building. It was also a speakeasy and art gallery before it was finally converted to a single-family home in the 1970s, according to listing agent Alyson Keller.

Architecture: The original structure has undergone major renovations over the last 90 years, but some of it has remained in tact. The interior brick walls, the sitting porch off the main bedroom, the upstairs porch that overlooks the skyline, and the gorgeous hardwoods throughout the main level are all original to the house.
Architect Allen Brooks, who’s worked on the house in recent years, describes the architecture “as a classic Charleston urban home.”
The historic, Southern style is balanced with funky fixtures, two-tone cabinetry, and mixed metals for a fresh, modern feel.

The exact address is 311 W. 9th St. At 3,000 square feet, it has 4 beds and 2.5 baths.
Recent upgrades: The house was updated in 2019 with an upgraded kitchen (walnut counters, new cabinets, beverage refrigerator); remodeled owner’s suite including all new bathroom; relocated and upgraded laundry room; and new built-ins and lighting.
Fourth Ward: The current owners say the charm of the house and neighborhood and the neighbors are some of the highlights. (Being walking distance from Alexander Michael’s wouldn’t be so bad either.)
Here’s a look around.
