Home Tour: You can rent this tiny house in Rock Hill for $199 a night
Looking for a cozy and quiet retreat? That’s what The Drake, a rentable tiny house 40 minutes from Charlotte, is for.
“It’s meant to be a retreat,” owner Mike Whitehead said. “It’s a mental health escape. We want to nourish people.”
I’m telling y’all, the few hours I spent touring were the most relaxed I’ve felt in 2020.
Property: The 50-acre property, which used to be a farm, is completely private (other than the Whitehead’s personal home). It’s got around 3 miles of mowed trail, plus another 2.5 miles around a creek. The Drake is toward the front of the property and sits on a giant field. The field has a table for two in the middle so you can picnic under the stars, or sip your coffee and watch the sun come up.
A little R&R: There isn’t WiFi at the house, because the idea is to “reflect, relax, and unplug,” Whitehead said.
Design: The Drake was designed by an architect in Colorado, Land Ark, who lived in it off the grid for a while with his wife and baby. It has a modern esthetic with a black exterior and light wood interior. He designed it so you could live comfortably yet minimally for long periods of time, or shorter trips. (You can buy one $149,900.)
Amenities: Rent mountain bikes or a gator to ride around the property. The house has a deck, fire pit (and ingredients for s’mores), and a grill. Whitehead has chickens on site so he offers fresh eggs every morning, too.
If there’s something you’d like to have on hand when you arrive, you can make requests after you book. For example, a person planned to propose the day I toured, and Whitehead and his team stocked the house with champagne, chocolate covered strawberries, etc.
To rent: The house is $199 a night. You can book it through Intentional Home Charlotte, Whitehead’s short-term rental company.
Here’s a look around.
