Farm Haus hot chicken
A butcher, a brewer, and a chef walked into a bar … and made it their own. They call it Farm Haus.
The new beer garden, butcher shop, and restaurant just outside Ballantyne in Indian Land, South Carolina, opens Friday, October 23. It serves local beers and meat-heavy dishes with locally sourced ingredients.
“I think to really be part of the community you have to source from the community and celebrate it,” says owner Tim Hurley.
Farm Haus’ beer garden is comprised of 5,000 square feet of outdoor space with seating, games, and a stage for live music. Hurley says he wanted to fill a void for people who’ve missed outdoor entertainment during the pandemic.
“I figured people out in the Waxhaw, Weddington, Indian Land, Ballantyne area don’t have anything to experience (with a) brewery, outdoor feel, so that’s kind what I envisioned,” he says.

Covid precautions: Farm Haus will require masks. The outdoor beer garden will make it easier to keep customers spaced out.
Because restrictions in South Carolina are looser than those in North Carolina, Farm Haus can operate at 100 percent of its capacity. It’s not required to space out tables or limit the number of people at each table. But, the state does still have restrictions on alcohol sales, which must stop at 11 p.m.
Menu: Farm Haus has a brunch menu, a sausage menu, and a main menu which is made up of sausage, burger, hot dog, and salad dishes plus sides and hand-spun milkshakes for dessert.
Chef Matthew Pickard says the meat is always the focus of Farm Haus dishes and the toppings and sides are meant to add additional visual appeal and taste.
“Getting back to the basic culinary roots and flavors of what these things should be,” he said. “It started with the meat in the thought process. Once you have such good, clean meat… now what do you do with it without taking away from it.”
Menu highlights include:
- Beergarden Brat: Bratwurst, mustard, grilled onions, sauerkraut, $8
- Bahn Mi: Ginger wasabi sausage, pickled carrots, cucumber, and radish, red chili pepper, cilantro, and Fire sauce, $9
- Butcher’s Burger: White cheddar, seared onions, grilled sliced pork belly, creole mustard, $11
