Now open: New York-style deli meets European street food at this new Plaza Midwood restaurant

“THEY’RE THE BOMB,” Clark says as I take a big bite of Belgian frites with European-style mayo and curry ketchup.

Clark loves frites and bratwursts and other European street food from his years living abroad, but that’s only half the concept at Good Wurst. The Central Avenue restaurant also brings in New York favorites like pastrami that are common in the delis he grew up with.

This is the first solo project for the Fuel Pizza restauranteur. Clark has also worked with that restaurant group Zen Taco in Overstreet Mall and other restaurants in Charlotte and New York City.

Layout: The 2,000-square-foot space is just east of Plaza Midwood near Three Amigos and Abugida Ethiopian Restaurant. Good Wurst has a few tables indoors and two picnic tables outside. There’s also a walk-up window for easy (and socially distanced) ordering. Inside, there’s shuffleboard, a dart board, and a TV that plays all Grateful Dead all the time.

Menu: Good Wurst’s menu is meat-focused with brats, schnitzel, and pastrami all made in-house. The pastrami, Clark explains, is a five-day process from marinade to plate. The fries are hand-cut with European-style mayo and curry ketchup. Other menu highlights include:

• House frankfurter ($3.95)
• Carolina dog ($4.75) – a house frankfurter, onions, slaw, and chili
• Belgian frites ($4.95) – french fries served with creamy European mayo, curry ketchup, and chopped onions

• Reuben style fries ($5.95) – pastrami crumbles, mustard cheese sauce, and green onion
• Pork Schnitzel sandwich ($8.95) – sautéed red cabbage, mushroom gravy, smashed fries

Free toppings: On any wurst and dog you can get a number of toppings for free — sauerkraut, pickle relish, coleslaw, Russian dressing, chopped onions, curry ketchup, ketchup, European mayo, mayo, spicy mustard, and yellow mustard.

Drinks: For dessert, go with a $4.50 vanilla ice cream float (root beer, orange crush, or cream soda). There’s also canned beer and wine.

Hours/location: Good Wurst is open 11 a.m.-8 p.m. daily. It’s located at 3001 Central Avenue, in a space that previously housed a laundromat.
