48-hour guide: How to spend the weekend in Charlotte with FOX 46 meteorologist Nick Kosir

Who: Nick Kosir

Job title: Morning meteorologist at FOX 46. Catch him on Good Day Charlotte from 4:30 to 9:00 a.m. Nick is also known for his high-energy dance videos. His #slidelikethis dance challenge has nearly 7 million views on Instagram. He’s also known for his #dripchronicles series, where he recreates the outrageous outfits of famous people like Cam Newton. He also has his own line of merchandise.

Neighborhood: Huntersville. “Or, as I call it, H-Ville.”

From Nick: “After moving between five states over the course of five years, my family and I settled down in Charlotte in 2014. I love living here because the city is clean and packed full of cool and intelligent people. Plus, the weather is about as good as it gets this side of the Mississippi.”

Here’s how Nick would spend a weekend entertaining out-of-town friends or family:

Friday: Beers, bonfire, BBQ, and cocktails

Unwinding with some beers: Most of my family and friends have to drive or fly across a few states when they come to visit. The best way to unwind after a road trip? By a fire pit with a craft beer. You can check both of these boxes at Sycamore Brewery. It’s the perfect place to chill out and catch up.

Dinner: If an out-of-towner comes to the Carolinas, you have to feed them a little barbecue, amiright?! Midwood Smokehouse has the best in the city. This was the first restaurant we ate at when we moved here, and we’ve been hooked since. But don’t take my word for it, Barack Obama and Justin Timberlake have also dined at Midwood Smokehouse, so you know it’s legit. I always start with the pimento cheese fries and then get the combo platter. And, trust me – you’re going to want to double up on those ribs. My wife always tries to talk me into sharing the combo platter, but I prefer to smash it by myself.

Post-dinner drinks: Once you’ve crushed some barbecue, head to Queen and Glass for a cocktail. The drinks are next-level, and very Instagram-worthy. Mixologist Bob Peters will knock your socks off with a custom cocktail. He can even put your picture into the foam on your drink. I don’t drink, but I did it for the ‘gram!

Saturday: Donuts and dancing

Duck Donuts for all: I’m not a huge breakfast guy. Normally I blend up a protein shake and call it a morning. But if we have guests in town, I’ll run out and grab a box of Duck Donuts. In an assortment of twelve, there will be something for everyone.

Retail therapy: Time to hit Birkdale Village. It’s a cool little stretch of shops in Huntersville, and has a little something for everyone, plus, it’s super dog-friendly. The coolest place in there is the Kilted Buffalo. It’s a dope little bar with plenty of craft beer and shuffleboard.

Lunchtime: We’re going to Little Village Grill. This joint puts fries on its gyros. They’re huge, and the flavors are unbelievable. I usually go with the lamb gyro (light on the onion, heavy on the tzatziki). Pro tip: have one person stand in line to order while the others find a place to sit.

Ice cream: Whit’s Frozen Custard. This place is the best. Grab a Buckeye Madness to go and explore downtown Davidson.

Rooftop views for dinner: We’re going to keep it classy with dinner, drinks, and incredible views of the 704. That’s right! We’re hitting Fahrenheit. If it’s warm, sit outside by the fireplace. Or, stay cozy inside. The giant booth at the back of the restaurant is the perfect place to hang out and pop bottles. I have tried every appetizer on the menu, and the Charlotte Nachos are the best. After you eat, go out on the deck and have a photoshoot with the Charlotte skyline behind you.

Saturday night plans: TURN UP TIME! It’s no secret that I like to dance. My favorite place to bust it down is 8.2.0 in Uptown. It’s a cool space with a couple of bars, a karaoke room, and a dance floor. Here’s the best part: you can end your night there with pizza and fries. No need for a Taco Bell run!

Sunday: Brunch on the lake

Sunday brunch: Let’s end the weekend with some time on Lake Norman. Head over to Port City Club in Cornelius. My wife is a big fan of the espresso martini. The views of the lake are awesome.

A stroll at Latta Plantation: After a weekend full of BBQ, banana pudding, and craft beer, we’re going to burn some calories at Latta Plantation. This place is beautiful regardless of the season, and your dog will love it. Buzzard Rock is a great place for views, which is the perfect cure for those #SundayScaries.
