Before and after: Fully renovated 1950s Mediterranean-inspired home in Hickory asks $565,000

“Our renovation took two years and lots of sweat equity. … It really has been a great time, and it is a special place,” current homeowner Ralph Griffith said. “Before us, the house was in disrepair and had been used as a rental for the last decade by a local realtor. The city awarded us with the beautification award for our efforts and now has been restored to its original, although somewhat updated, splendor.”

The home was originally built and owned by Paul and Pauline Lavitt who came to Hickory from New York and founded Lavitt Mills.

The exact address is 2082 NW 2nd Street Drive, Hickory. At 5,107 square feet, it has four bedrooms and six full and two half baths.

The expansive home sits on a one-acre private lot, and Joan Killian Everett at Berkshire Hathaway Hickory Metro Real Estate has the listing.

Here’s what it looked like before.

The largest undertaking was the kitchen, which was completely gutted.

They restructured the layout, added modern appliances, installed new cabinets, countertops and backsplash and more.

“The imported Bertazzoni Italian range and the trellis tile on the walls complement the Mediterranean architecture of the home,” Ralph told the Agenda.

Previously, the home had darker wood tones throughout, making it feel dark and dated.

Lighter flooring, neutral wall colors, detailed trim, new tiles, elegant light fixtures and arched doorways work together to create a much more modern and light-filled home that still feels true to the original Mediterranean design.

“I think the two masters en suites on the first floor are pretty special. The ‘hers’ side with all of the custom shoe shelving in the spa-like bathroom certainly stand out,” Ralph said of his favorite room in the house.

The detail in this space is incredible, from the arched built-ins to the free-standing bathtub sitting under a chandelier. The bathroom reminds me of a well-designed hotel spa.

Other highlights include the cork-walled soundproof game room downstairs, the wine cellar and private deck overlooking the wooded backyard.
