23 unique apartment units still up for grabs in Plaza Midwood’s converted 122-year-old former Louise Cotton Mill

The mill was built in 1897, and it’s one of the last standing mills in Charlotte, tucked just behind Central Avenue in Plaza.

I toured the building, and it’s awesome.

What’s unique: Clachan Properties, a Virginia-based real estate company, specializes in restoring historic buildings and turning them into apartment communities. For The Lofts at Hawthorne Mill they preserved as much of the building as they could, so the brick exterior, flooring and beams are original and the windows are replicas of what would have been used more than 100 years ago.

Design: The entire project is built around the original structure of the mill, and each unit has exposed brick, refinished original hardwoods, wood beams and huge windows. It’s incredible.

Amenities: They’ve got a huge grassy lawn with tons of outdoor lounge seating and a fire pit; a pool with aqua lounge chairs and a bar area; a dog run/park; gym; and a two-story common area with game tables upstairs and a kitchen and living area downstairs.

Floor plans: They have one- and two-bedroom options, and because they were working around the original structure (tons of beams and posts) each one is unique. They have 50 one-bed floor plans and 89 two-bed floor plans. Most of the two-bed are two stories with one bedroom up, one down.

Rent: All of the one bedroom units are taken, but two-beds are $1,595-$1,750 per month.

What’s available: They’ve got 23 units available, all two-bed, two-bath between 869 and 1,043 square feet, price between $1,595-$1,750 a month.
