Am I the only parent who wants an apartment community aimed at young families?

I rented a house in Wesley Heights with two friends.

I moved into a rented duplex with my then-boyfriend-now-husband in Plaza Midwood.

We bought a condo in Sedgefield (had a baby).

Then after a year and a half, we sold the condo to live in a two-bedroom, two-bathroom apartment in Midtown.

If I had to rank them from best to worst, renting in a high-rise apartment tops the list.

In case you are horrified that we gave up home ownership (in our 30s, gasp!) to go back to renting, hear me out.

Homeownership was hard, our condo needed a lot of work after a freak water damage incident and with a 1.5-year-old in tow, we didn’t want to spend another dollar on things behind the walls.

Instead of stressing out over another down payment, we signed a lease at the Berkshire Dilworth and never looked back.

But I want more.

Am I the only parent who wants an apartment community with all the fancy amenities that is family-friendly and aimed at young parents?

Picture this: a modern style high-rise building with only two- to three-bedroom units that have “home” features like a dining room, a fully upgraded kitchen with a walk-in pantry and a legit master suite.

Other features that would seal the deal would be an office (that could double as a playroom), solid storage solutions in the closets and a drop-zone entry area.

Now let’s talk amenities. Give me all the trendy perks that are popping up in the new apartments like a big pool with cabanas and grilling stations, a fully loaded gym, a clubhouse and airy green space.

Am I asking for too much? I don’t think so.  Young, non-parent, twenty-somethings have seriously cool options to live that are nestled in trendy neighborhoods and from experience, that doesn’t change all too much when you choose to make the leap into parenthood.

As a young family, we want to stay in the urban areas of Charlotte that are so convenient to work, daycare and where we shop, but we truly can’t afford to buy-in yet.

While my perfect family high-rise doesn’t exist, where we are now is really close. We have a dining room, a full master suite (that is much bigger than the second bedroom and bath) and a very modern kitchen with an island.

However, should this family-friendly millennial apartment complex pop up in one of the surrounding Uptown neighborhoods, I am all in. And I’d bet you’d see a whole new generation of parents that would be interested as well.
