Blind Date: Annie and Alec, both 24 years old, give Pam and Jim a run for their money at Office trivia

Meet Annie and Alec.

Annie is a 24-year-old living in Dilworth and working in marketing, who has been in Charlotte for about two years.

So far, her favorite things to do are brewery hopping, trivia nights, biking and going out for ice cream. She describes herself as easygoing and her best friend calls her “athletic, funny, loving, loyal, smart, FUN!”

Alec, also 24, is relatively new to the city and living in LoSo working as an engineer at a tech company.

He’s been in Charlotte for a few months and has found that he loves South End and has really enjoyed exploring the beer scene in his time here, but has added the Whitewater Center and Crowders Mountain to his CLT bucket list.

He describes himself as an “adventurous, outgoing guy” and his best friend says he’s “funny, loves sports, mature, well-rounded and very social.”

I matched Annie and Alec because, honestly, there was no reason not to; they both seem to be really fun, outgoing people that aren’t afraid to try something new.

In a potential partner, they both look for someone that’s easy-going and as comfortable going for a weekend at the lake as they are planning a spontaneous trip to the mountains, and I believed that they’d find that in each other.

They both say that their favorite Netflix binge is The Office and that when it comes to first dates, they enjoy having an activity to focus on, so we sent them to a round of The Office-themed trivia at Peculiar Rabbit. Here’s how it went.

How do you feel about the dating scene in Charlotte? And if you’re in it, how are you meeting people?

Annie: I’ve dated here and there, but definitely not regularly. I haven’t really gotten into the app scene too much. I’ve tried, but I think it’s more natural for me to meet people in a group or when I’m out. Apps just don’t seem right for me.

I feel like there are a lot of young people and different people to meet in Charlotte. I’m fairly new here, so I feel like there are definitely opportunities to meet people, whether it’s for friends or dating. There’s a lot of opportunity in Charlotte.

Alec: Between work and traveling for work, I haven’t really had time to date. I’ve been on Tinder, but it’s not that fun after 10 swipes.

I don’t have an opinion on dating in Charlotte, but I’ve heard rumors it’s horrible. From what I’ve heard, it’s nothing but horrible dates, but it doesn’t make me nervous to try because I’m a sociable person and enjoy going out and meeting people.

How did you feel leading up to the date?

Annie: It was fun from the start. I’ve never been on a blind date and I know that a lot of people see it, so it was definitely like stepping out of a comfort zone, but it was a fun experience.

The only thing I knew walking in was that he was wearing a blue plaid shirt, so I saw him and honestly thought, ‘Is that plaid?’ It was really small plaid, so I kind of had to walk up to him – and I had no idea what he looked like – but it was interesting being truly blind. It was fun. It was exciting.

Alec: I was really excited. I love trying new things. My buddy was just messing with me the whole time and giving me the worst case scenarios, but I was really excited.

What was your first impression?

Annie: He was really nice. He got up right away, gave me a hug and we chatted a while before trivia started. He was really nice and really outgoing right from the start.

Alec: She seemed really cute, really fun and not awkward at all. She was sociable.

Did you guys get along?

Annie: Conversation was really easy. I don’t think there was an awkward pause, really, throughout the night, which was nice. We talked about a lot of stuff, like work, family, what we do for fun.

Trivia was nice. I actually hadn’t seen The Office in a long time so I was a little bit rusty, but so was he, so we were both struggling on that end. We definitely didn’t win, but as we were talking through the rounds, we found out we both played lacrosse and have a lot of similarities in things like where we like to go in Charlotte. We had a lot in common and it lent itself to natural conversation.

I think it went well and I think there was chemistry. It may be too early to tell, but we definitely clicked and got along really well.

Alec: Yeah, you did really well on the commonalities there. Lacrosse, skiing, the whole gamut, you know? Everything was pretty common and conversation flowed through the night. The only time it was awkward was when our margaritas were out [laughs], but we were trash at trivia. Absolute trash. We were not prepared for that level of trivia.

I had a lot of fun and it’s the first time we’ve met each other so both parties are reserved, but I’d hang out with her again.

How did you leave it?

Annie: After trivia, we stayed until they closed, I think until 10:15. He got my number and told me to text him this weekend but I told him there’d be a big hurricane so I wasn’t sure how that’d work out, but he made sure I got into my Uber and we parted ways.

Yeah, I’d go out with him again.

Alec: We stuck around and had some food and more drinks and talked. I hugged her, got her number and then we both went home.

We’ve kept in touch. I texted her today, actually.

What rating would you give the date? Let’s do it on a one to five scale.

Annie: I would say a five. He was really nice, I love trivia and the drinks were really good. Is that too aggressive? I really think I would say a five.

Alec: I’d give it a five out five. It was fun. Peculiar Rabbit was fun, she was a lot of fun and conversation was great. Five out of five.
