Fall is just around the corner (how is it already September?) which means that, along with cooler weather, so are everybody’s favorite area festivals. Here are the five you can’t miss, sorted chronologically.
Yiasou Greek Festival
September 6-9 | Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral | $3
The Dilworth favorite is back for its 41st year and attendees can expect the best of all things Greek, including authentic food, Hellenic exhibits, live music and dancing, art and more. Take the Blue Line, present your ticket for free entry and use what would’ve been your ticket money for the must-eat baklava sundae.

Festival in the Park
September 21-23 | Freedom Park | Free
Since 1964, the festival has given local artists and makers a place to showcase their talents against the backdrop of Freedom Park (if you can, go on Friday or Saturday night to see it lit up next to the pond). Not a fan of art? The festival also offers live music, kids’ activities and county fair-esque foods like funnel cake – there’s something for everyone.

Carolina Renaissance Festival
September 29-November 18 | 16445 Poplar Tent Road, Huntersville | $12-$25 | Tickets
More than 1,000 artists and costumed characters come together in a completely immersive experience that sees Fairhaven come to life with an artisan marketplace, food (get the giant turkey leg) and performances scattered across a dozen stages. Performances are, for the most part, kid-friendly, but a few are marked “LC” for “loose cannon.” Don’t miss the jousting sessions, biggest and most elaborate performances, or the live falconry demonstration.
25th Annual Apple Harvest Festival
October 20 | Windy Hill Orchard | 10 a.m.-6 p.m.
Details have yet to emerge on this festival, which sells out year after year, but past years have included a hard cider bar, cider donuts, blacksmith demonstrations, kid-friendly activities like a hayride and bounce house and more.

South End Wine Festival
October 20 | 308 West Carson Boulevard | 1-6 p.m. | $10-$550 | Tickets
If unlimited tastings from 25 vineyards, plus live music and food trucks aren’t enough to get you out to this South End staple, maybe the fact that your tickets benefit Classroom Central will. Expect wines from South America, California, Spain, France and, of all places, Lidl, the German supermarket.
